Following a trend in the population as a whole, Washington's student population has grown more diverse. In 1999, 76 percent of students attending the state's public four-year institutions were white. By 2009, fewer than 69 percent were white. Hispanics, Washington's fastest-growing minority group, accounted for nearly 4 percent of students at public four-year institutions in 1999, compared to 6.5 percent in 2009.
