State Authorization, Licensing,
and Private Accreditation
In Washington, state agencies “authorize” or “license”
colleges, universities, and private vocational or technical schools;
private organizations “accredit” them. Authorized and licensed institutions
must meet minimum standards required by state law to offer programs
in Washington.
Authorization
The Higher Education Coordinating Board authorizes
colleges and universities that offer associate, bachelors, and graduate
degree programs.
See: How to apply for state authorization
Licensing
The Workforce Training
and Education Coordinating Board licenses private vocational
and technical schools that offer diploma or certificate programs in the
state.
Accreditation
Private accrediting organizations accredit institutions
and their programs. Accreditation is a means of self-regulation and peer
review by the educational community, and may cover an entire institution
or specific programs. The accreditation process is voluntary and can take
up to 10 years. In general, schools must operate for at least two years
before they can apply for accreditation.
The U.S. Department of Education reviews some accrediting organizations
and maintains a list of those it recognizes. To view the list and learn
more about accreditation, please visit the U.S.
Department of Education Web site.
